Streaming news roundup: DAZN picks up Sunday Ticket for bars, and the NFL keeps buying into its broadcasters

DAZN agreed to buy EverPass Media, the company that distributes NFL Sunday Ticket to bars and restaurants, rebranding it 'DAZN for Business.' The deal makes the NFL's investment arm a shareholder in DAZN, adding to the league's stakes in ESPN and Paramount. Your home Sunday Ticket isn't moving, but here's why the deal matters.

The gist: A big sports-media deal landed this week, and the headline (DAZN and NFL Sunday Ticket in the same sentence) might make you nervous about your subscription. Don't be: this one is about bars, not living rooms. The more interesting thread is what it says about the NFL, which keeps quietly becoming a part-owner of the companies that show its games. Here's what changed.

DAZN is buying the commercial side of Sunday Ticket

On Wednesday, DAZN agreed to acquire EverPass Media, the company that holds the exclusive rights to distribute NFL Sunday Ticket to commercial venues: the bars, restaurants, and hotels where you watch out-of-market games on a wall of screens. DAZN will rebrand it "DAZN for Business." Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Two things to know up front. First, this is the commercial version of Sunday Ticket, not the one you buy at home. If you get Sunday Ticket through YouTube TV, nothing changes: that residential deal runs through the end of the decade. Second, a recent EverPass agreement with DirecTV means venues won't be forced to stream it, and can keep getting the package by satellite too.

The more interesting part: the NFL keeps buying into its broadcasters

The detail worth noticing is who is now invested in DAZN. As part of the deal, the NFL's investment arm (32 Equity), along with RedBird Capital and TKO Group, become minority shareholders in DAZN. EverPass was co-founded by 32 Equity back in 2023, so the league is deepening a relationship it already had.

That fits a growing pattern. Earlier this year, the NFL took a 10 percent stake in ESPN in exchange for handing over media assets including NFL Network and RedZone (the same shift that briefly pulled those channels off Xfinity this spring). The league also picked up a minority piece of Paramount, and therefore CBS, through the Skydance merger. Add DAZN, and the NFL is now a part-owner of ESPN, CBS, and a fast-growing global streamer, all companies that pay to show its games.

What it means for you

For now, not much at home. Consumer Sunday Ticket stays on YouTube TV, and this deal is about commercial venues. But it's a useful signal of two things.

DAZN keeps expanding in the US. It's already the local streaming home for the Pacers, Timberwolves, and the New York-area teams, and now it's tied to the NFL as well. If DAZN ends up carrying your local NBA team this season, that's the same company getting deeper into football.

And the league is threading itself into the ownership of the platforms that carry the game. As more of the NFL moves to streaming, who owns those platforms starts to matter, and the NFL increasingly owns a slice of them.

The bottom line

Nothing about how you watch football changes this season. But DAZN just got bigger and more NFL-connected, and the NFL added another media company to a portfolio that already includes pieces of ESPN and CBS. As the walls between leagues and the platforms that show them keep coming down, deals like this one are a preview of a more consolidated future.
