How to watch college football in 2026: when it starts, where the games live, and the new streaming wrinkles

College football returns in about three weeks, and the TV map has a few new wrinkles this year: more games nudging onto streaming, the CW as a real conference home, and the most widely distributed College Football Playoff yet. Here's when the season starts, which networks and apps carry which conferences, and how to watch the Playoff in January.

The gist: Kickoff is about three weeks away. The good news for cord-cutters is that the four broadcast networks and the CW carry a large share of the schedule over the air, and this year's Playoff puts at least one game per round on ABC. The catch is everything else, which is scattered across ESPN, the conference networks, and a growing list of streaming apps. Here's the full map, and the cheapest way to cover your team.

When the season starts

• Week 0: Saturday, August 29. A limited early slate opens the season, headlined by North Carolina vs. TCU at noon ET from Dublin, Ireland, on ESPN. (FCS teams get going a couple of days earlier, on Thursday, August 27.)
• Week 1: September 3 to 7. The first full weekend runs Thursday, September 3 through Monday, September 7, with the biggest slate on Saturday, September 5 over Labor Day weekend.

Where the games live: the conference TV map

Most of college football's TV homes are stable this year, organized by conference:

• SEC → ABC/ESPN (and the SEC Network). For the third season, the SEC is exclusive to the Disney family, with the marquee "Game of the Week" usually on ABC.
• Big Ten → the "tripleheader." Games are split across Fox (noon, the "Big Noon" window), CBS (3:30 p.m.), and NBC (primetime), plus the Big Ten Network. NBC's games stream on Peacock, and CBS's stream on Paramount+.
• Big 12 → mostly ESPN/ABC and Fox.
• ACC → ESPN/ABC and the ACC Network, with a selection of games on The CW.
• Pac-12 (rebuilt) and Mountain West → The CW, which carries a significant slate this year.
• Additional games land on ESPN+, FS1, and CBS Sports Network throughout the week.

The new streaming wrinkles this year

A few things changed since last season:

• ESPN Unlimited now includes CW Sports. As of August 4, the CW's sports package (ACC, Pac-12, and Mountain West football and basketball, plus NASCAR and WWE NXT) streams live inside the ESPN app for ESPN Unlimited subscribers, on top of the CW's over-the-air broadcasts. If you're chasing a Pac-12 or Mountain West team, that's a notable addition.
• More college football is coming to Disney+. Disney said this week it will simulcast more ESPN college football games (and College GameDay) on Disney+ this fall, a way to sample the sport without the full ESPN add-on. We covered the details in Friday's roundup.
• The cord-cutter shorthand: an antenna pulls in ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and the CW over the air; a live-TV streamer (YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, or Sling) adds ESPN and the conference networks; Peacock carries the NBC/Big Ten games; and ESPN Unlimited adds the ESPN+ games and now CW Sports.

How to watch the College Football Playoff

The 12-team Playoff returns for a third year, and this is the most widely distributed edition yet. For the first time, one game per round is simulcast on ABC, giving anyone with an antenna over-the-air access to at least one game in every round. Warner Bros. Discovery's TNT and truTV carry five matchups (including a semifinal), the most ever, streaming on HBO Max, while ESPN and ABC games stream in the ESPN app.

The schedule:

• Selection Day (bracket reveal): Sunday, December 6.
• First Round: Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19, played at campus sites (the higher seed hosts), across ESPN, ABC/ESPN, and TNT/truTV (HBO Max).
• Quarterfinals: Wednesday, December 30 (Fiesta Bowl) and Friday, January 1 (Cotton, Rose, and Peach Bowls), across TNT/truTV (HBO Max) and ABC/ESPN.
• Semifinals: Thursday, January 14 (Orange Bowl, Miami) and Friday, January 15 (Sugar Bowl, New Orleans).
• National Championship: Monday, January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, on ABC. It's the latest title-game date in the sport's history.

What you need for 100% coverage

If your goal is to catch every college football game this season, here's the complete stack:

• A comprehensive live-TV streaming service (YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, or Fubo). These carry your local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and CW stations along with ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, the conference networks (SEC Network, Big Ten Network, ACC Network), and CBS Sports Network. An antenna can stand in for the broadcast networks if you'd rather not pay for a package that includes them.
• ESPN Unlimited (on its own or through the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN bundle) for the ESPN+ games and the CW Sports package.
• For the Playoff: the ESPN app covers the ESPN and ABC games, and HBO Max covers the TNT and truTV games.

That combination leaves virtually nothing out, though it's more than most fans need.

The optimal setup for most fans

You probably don't need all of that. For most people, the sweet spot is an antenna for the broadcast networks, which carry a large share of the marquee games, plus one live-TV streamer for ESPN and the conference networks. Add ESPN Unlimited only if your team's games regularly land on ESPN+ or CW Sports. And because one Playoff game per round now simulcasts on ABC, you can follow at least part of the Playoff with nothing but an antenna.
