Streaming news roundup: more ESPN college football is coming to Disney+, and Fox says no to an early NFL deal
Two earnings-call developments this week shape where your sports live: Disney is bringing more ESPN college football to Disney+ this fall to nudge subscribers toward the ESPN bundle, and Fox told the NFL it won't renegotiate its rights deal early, a sign the league's push for bigger payments is stalling. Here's what both mean for what you watch.
The gist: Earnings season quietly reshaped a couple of things about where your sports live. One move makes it a little easier to stumble onto college football without paying extra. The other signals that the NFL's effort to squeeze more money out of its TV partners is running into real resistance. Neither changes your channels tomorrow, but both hint at where the fight over sports rights is heading.
More ESPN college football is coming to Disney+ this fall
On Disney's August 5 earnings call, the company said it will bring more ESPN broadcasts (specifically more college football simulcasts, plus College GameDay) to Disney+ subscribers this fall, a step up from recent years.
The intent is right there in Disney's own framing: it's a taste, meant to entice Disney+-only subscribers to upgrade into the ESPN Unlimited bundle. So you'll get some college football on Disney+ without the separate ESPN add-on, but not everything. Executives were explicit that the goal is to "drive additional upsell into Disney+, Hulu, and the ESPN Unlimited bundle."
It fits ESPN's larger ambition to be "the front door for sports fans," the one-stop hub for live sports, regardless of who owns the rights. On that note, the CW Sports package (ACC, Pac-12, and Mountain West football and basketball, plus NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and WWE NXT) just launched inside the ESPN app for ESPN Unlimited subscribers on August 4, adding more than 800 hours of live sports a year on top of the CW's over-the-air broadcasts.

Fox tells the NFL: no early renegotiation
On Fox's August 6 earnings call, CEO Lachlan Murdoch said Fox will not renegotiate its NFL rights deal early, with no changes to its current contract before the league's opt-out window after the 2029 season. Fox will "engage with the NFL on the opt-out seasons and beyond at a date closer to the 2030 season."
The backdrop: for more than a year, the NFL has pushed its TV partners to pay more now, reportedly seeking to roughly double its current fees of about $10 billion a year, in exchange for dropping its 2029 opt-out and letting the deals run through 2033-34. Fox has been the most publicly resistant, and just formally bowed out. With CBS-parent Paramount's talks stalled by its pending merger, and NBCUniversal and Disney saying they aren't in active negotiations, the early-renewal push is losing steam.
Why it matters to you: those rights fees ultimately flow through to what you pay to watch football. The near-term upshot is stability, with no shake-up to where NFL games air. Fox and CBS keep the Sunday-afternoon packages, and the current lineup (Fox, CBS, NBC, ESPN/ABC, Amazon's Thursday games, YouTube's Sunday Ticket, and Netflix's Christmas games) runs through at least the 2029 season.
