Streaming news roundup: the USMNT is out, but the World Cup's biggest matches are still ahead — plus Wimbledon's final week

The USMNT's World Cup run ended Monday in a record-setting 4-1 loss to Belgium — the most-watched soccer match in U.S. history — and all three co-hosts are now out. But the tournament's marquee quarterfinals are still ahead this weekend on FOX, and Wimbledon reaches its final week on ESPN.

The gist: The USMNT's World Cup run ended Monday night — a 4-1 loss to Belgium that, fittingly, drew the largest audience for any soccer match in U.S. history. With all three co-hosts now out, the natural question is whether it's still worth tuning in. For anyone who cares about a good game, the answer is yes: the tournament's best matches are still ahead this weekend. Meanwhile, Wimbledon hits its final week. Here's what's on and how to watch.

The U.S. is out — but the World Cup's marquee round is still ahead

The Americans fell 4-1 to Belgium in Seattle on Monday, and all three co-hosts — the U.S., Mexico, and Canada — are now eliminated. If it's any consolation, the country tuned in like never before: the match drew about 30 million viewers on FOX, the most-watched soccer telecast in U.S. history, peaking near 37 million. One FOX executive said the tournament's reach has been "almost like having a second NFL season" — and St. Louis ranked among the strongest local markets for the U.S. run.

Today (Wednesday) is the tournament's first rest day in nearly four weeks. Then the quarterfinals — arguably the best round of the whole event, with Messi (Argentina), Mbappé (France), and Haaland (Norway) all still alive — run Thursday through Saturday:

  • Thu, July 9, 4 p.m. ET — France vs. Morocco (Boston)
  • Fri, July 10, 3 p.m. ET — Spain vs. Belgium (Los Angeles)
  • Sat, July 11, 5 p.m. ET — Norway vs. England (Miami)
  • Sat, July 11, 9 p.m. ET — Argentina vs. Switzerland (Kansas City)

The key point for cord-cutters: you don't need a new subscription to follow it to the end. Every match is on FOX and FS1 in English and Telemundo in Spanish (streaming on Peacock). If you already get FOX — through an antenna or any live-TV service — you're set; to stream, FOX One ($19.99/month) carries every game, as does any service with FOX and FS1 (YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DIRECTV, or Sling's $19.99 Select plan). Full breakdown in our World Cup guide.

Wimbledon reaches its final week

If you need a sports fix on the World Cup's rest day, Wimbledon is in its business end. The Championships run through Sunday, July 12, with the quarterfinals on now, semifinals Thursday and Friday, and the finals over the weekend — Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and a Taylor Fritz–Alexander Zverev quarterfinal among the draws still alive.

In the U.S., every match is on ESPN and ESPN2 (Spanish on ESPN Deportes). If you already get ESPN through a TV provider, it's included at no extra cost. To stream it standalone, ESPN Unlimited ($29.99/month) carries every court in the ESPN app. And if you just want to catch a match or two, a Sling day pass — $4.99 for 24 hours — includes ESPN and ESPN2, cheaper than a month of anything. A few finals-weekend matches also air on ABC.

Looking ahead

Once the World Cup quarterfinals wrap, MLB All-Star Week in Philadelphia (July 10–14) is next up — and this year the Home Run Derby moves to Netflix while the All-Star Game stays on FOX. We broke down where each piece lands here.
